In a nail-biting finish Hong Kong China edged Indonesia 7-6 in the extra 8th inning, after both teams were level 6-6, in the opening Group B match in the WBSC Softball Asia/Oceania Qualifier for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics at the Shanghai Chongming Sports Training Center this morning.

In a nail-biting finish Hong Kong China edged Indonesia 6-5 in the extra 8th inning, after both teams were level 4-4, in the opening Group B match in the WBSC Softball Asia/Oceania Qualifier for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics at the Shanghai Chongming Sports Training Center this morning.

Indonesia forced the game to the extra inning when they came from behind to score two runs to level 6-6 in the 7th inning when Irene Awom singles to left field saw Febina Fitriani run home, while Delin’s singles through the left side, saw Syehan Ramadina level ,to force the game to extra inning.

Cresida Dwiyanti had Indonesia on advantage with a run in the extra inning, but Hong Kong came back strongly when Wong Marcia Ka-Yan reaches on fielders choice and Chen Sze Lam scores before Leung Tsz Yan doubles down right field line for Wong to clinch the winner.

Hong Kong took the lead with a run in the second inning before Indonesia drew level in the next winning before Indonesia score one and Hong Kong three in the fifth inning to lead 4-2.

Hong Kong’s manager and head Japanese coach Den Oshima was a relieved man.

“It was a close game and Indonesia gave us a run for our money,” said Oshima.

“We made the difficult for us as the players were nervous as it was the opening game and a great deal was at stake to start on a winning note.

“I am just glad that we manage to win although in a close match. We can only get better, but against Chinese Taipei, it is going to be much tougher and we have to perform much better.”

In the Asia Cup in May in Jakarta, which served as the qualifier for this tournament, Hong Kong had also narrowly defeated Indonesia 6-5.

Indonesian manager and head coach Iwan Suhariadi was naturally disappointed.

“The game was for our taking. We did well to come from behind, but were unlucky to have lost,” said Iwan.

“Hong Kong made more errors than us today, but they won.

Indonesia play Australia tomorrow.
