Scott Brosius will manage USA at WBSC Premier12

“We are grateful that Joe was a part of Team USA and we appreciate the time and preparation he dedicated to our endeavor of qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games,” said Paul Seiler, USA Baseball’s Executive Director and CEO

USA Baseball announced that Scott Brosius would replace Joe Girardi as the manager of the WBSC Premier12 2019 team.

Scott Brosius is the USA Baseball Senior Director of Player Development and was going to be the bench coach on Girardi’s staff. A Gold Glove third baseman in his playing days, Brosius helped the New York Yankees win consecutive World Series from 1998 to 2000. He was named the World Series MVP in 1998.

“We are grateful that Joe was a part of Team USA and we appreciate the time and preparation he dedicated to our endeavour of qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games,” said Paul Seiler, USA Baseball’s Executive Director and CEO

“It is a tremendous honour to be named the manager for the USA Baseball Premier12,” commented Brosius.

The first act by Brosius in his new role was completing the coaching staff. He chose Anthony Sanders, who will serve as his first base coach.
Sanders, a former MLB outfielder, served as a coach during the Premier12 2015. He was on the USA gold medal team at the Sydney Olympics.

Willie Randolph, who managed the USA at the inaugural Premier12 in 2015, will be the bench coach. Ernie Young will be the third base coach.
The staff also includes pitching coach Bryan Price and assistant coaches Rolando De Armas and Phil Plantier.

Joe Girardi, who was named the manager in August, stepped down from his role to pursue open managerial opportunities in Major League Baseball. Girardi was with Brosius on the Yankee’s World Series champion roster in 1998 and 1999 and managed New York to their 27th World Series title in 2009.

The USA National Team will train in Surprise, Arizona, from October 21-28 at the Kansas City Royals Spring Training facility before travelling to Guadalajara, Mexico, for the opening round of the Premier12.

The USA will face in group A of the Premier12 the hosts Mexico, the Netherlands and the Dominican Republic.
