Nerissa Myers hit two homers to guide Great Britain to a 9-2 victory in 6 innings over Spain in the first game of the WBSC Softball Europe/Africa Qualifier. Tomorrow, Great Britain will face South Africa, while Spain will take on Netherlands.

After the press conference held on Monday afternoon in the beautiful Old City Center in Utrecht, the Women’s Softball Europe/Africa Qualifier was finally underway with the first game of the tournament between Great Britain and Spain. Time Hutchinson got the call for the British Team. On the other side, Beatriz Parejo was the starting pitcher for the Spanish Team.

In the second inning, Great Britain had the opportunity to score first, but it couldn’t. With one out, Georgina Corrick hit a single and Chloe Wigington took 4 balls. Then, Amie Hutchinson flied out tot center field and Sydney Brown grounded out to shortstop.

Spain took the lead in the first half of the third inning. With one out, Candela Garcia and Carla Segura singled. Meritxell Blesa hit a single but, in the action, Great Britain made a great defense and got Garcia Cabedo out at third. Anyway, later, Uxua Modrego singled to left center for the 1-0 lead.

In the second half of the inning, Great Britain overturned the result. Aubrey Peterson singled and Nerissa Myers homered to deep center field for the 2-1 lead. In the fourth inning, Great Britain extended the lead. Chloe Wignigton tripled and Amie Hutchinson doubled for the 3-1. Then, Sydney Brown walked. All the players went to scoring position, with a passed ball. Then, Peterson hit a sacrifice fly for the 4-0. Spain got the second out, but Alicia Wolny hit a single and Amy Moore doubled for the 6-1.

On the other side, Spain tried to bounce back but it couldn’t. Hannah Edwards, the British relief pitcher closed the door, allowing only one point and 2 hits in 3 innings, and got the win.

 

In the sixth inning, Nerissa Myers hit another blast for the 7-2 lead. Great Britain added 2 more points in the same frame and got the win 9-2 thanked to the Mercy Rule.

Tomorrow, Great Britain will face South Africa at 13.00, while Spain will take on Netherlands at 19.00.
