MSWC 2019: Argentina advances to semi-finals, knocks out USA in the quarter-finals

A strong offensive performance lifted Argentina past United States, 9-0, in five innings. The South American team connected 8 hits in four innings, as Juan Potolicchio and Pablo Migliavacca combined for the shutout.

A strong offensive performance lifted Argentina past United States, 9-0, in five innings. The South American team connected 8 hits in four innings, as Juan Potolicchio and Pablo Migliavacca combined for the shutout.

Argentina advanced to the semi-finals and secured a place in the top four in the final standings for the third time in history (2013 and 2017) and the second time in a row. They will try to get their first-ever in this event.

Argentine’s bats gave no chance to USA, setting the tone of the game since the beginning. Argentina jumped ahead in the first inning with a sac fly to center field by Bruno Motroni, and RBI singles off the bats of Santiago Carril and Mariano Montero.

The offensive showing continued with a 5-run second inning, highlighted by an RBI single by Motroni and a 2-run shot off the bat of Montero -who ended the game with 3 RBIs. One inning later Gustavo Godoy scored the last run of the game on a double-play grounder, to make it 9-0.

Juan Potolicchio pitched four scoreless innings fanning 6, with 3 hits and no walks. Pablo Migliavacca pitched the fifth inning with 2 strikeouts and 2 hits.

Tony Mancha was charged with the loss for USA. He lasted only 1+ innings, surrendering 4 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks, with 1K.

Tomorrow Argentina will play tomorrow, at 19:30, against Canada. USA will compete for the fifth place.

Netherlands tops Botswana in eight

Netherlands ended today its participation in the World Championship in the 13th position, after defeating Botswana, 6-5, in eight innings. The African nation scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game, but then couldn’t score in the bottom of the eighth. Revin Brooks produced the game-winning run with a double.

Botswana ended the event in the 14th place.
