Carrion dominates, Mexico beats Australia

Mexico didn’t have a win in the super round so far but outscored Australia and gave a big blow to the Aussie hope to make the medal round. Starting pitcher Yeraldine Carrion got 16 of the 21 outs on strikes

Mexico beat Australia, 5-1, giving a big blow to Aussie‘s hopes for a spot in the medal round. Yeraldine Carrion dominated the Australian lineup, going the distance and allowing only one run on four hits and two walks while striking out 16.

Mexico got on the scoreboard in the top of the first against Madison Scott. With a runner on, second baseman Paola Villegas doubled to deep left field. With runners at second and third and two outs, a hard grounder by third baseman Alyssa Hernandez went by third base, was ruled a doubled and scored two-run. The third run scored on a wild pitch.

Mexico did not need to look back. The line up kept having success on relief pitchers Jorja Barret and Emily Peters. Mexico added a couple of runs in the bottom of the third when catcher Quinn Deavila made Australia pay a defensive error with an RBI single.
Mexico would have scored more if some questionable base running hadn’t lost a couple of runners, one at home plate in the first.

Australia’s hitters got to Carrion only in the top of the second. With temporary runner Philippa Adkins at second, shortstop Kayla Inzunza could only stop a hard grounder by Aussie third baseman Jade Whatman and Adkins beat her throw home.
