Australia earned a key win for their medal hopes with a 6-2 victory over Puerto Rico, for the Super Round of the WBSC U-19 Women’s Softball World Cup

Australia earned a key win for their medal hopes, 6-2, over Puerto Rico, for the Super Round of the WBSC U-19 Women’s Softball World Cup. Georgia Hood went the distance with 3 strikeouts, 2 runs and 7 hits, and led the Aussie to win.

Australia opened the score in the top of the third inning. Kayla Hancox hit a 2-out bloop double to left field and scored on a single by Jenna Trim to right field.

Puerto Rico answered in the home half of the same inning with two runs to take the lead. After two quick outs, Tatiana Roman and Aminah Vega hit back to back singles, and then Roman scored on an illegal pitch call. Four pitches later Victoria Figueroa plated Vega with the third single in a row to take a 2-1 lead.

However, Australia tied the game in the top of the fourth. Georgia Hood led off with a long double to left field, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Ellie Marks.

One inning later Isabelle Hanna bunted for a hit to open the inning, and Hancox laid down bunt forcing a throwing error by pitcher Esperanza Coe, allowing Hanna to score from first. Then Hancox scored easily on a grounder to shortstop to make it 4-2.

In the sixth inning, Australia added two more runs. With two outs on the scoreboard Shaylan Whatman hit a single up the middle, Philippa Adkins walked and pinch hitter Madisun Graham hit a single to center field to plate Whatman, while Adkins was also able to score on a throwing error trying to assist to home plate.

Australia’s record is now 2-2 in the Super Round and later will play against Canada in a key match for both teams. Puerto Rico dropped to 1-4.
