Singapore and South Africa delivered the U-18 Men's Softball World Cup's first extra inning game with Mathew Tan doing the heroics after firing 17 strikeouts.

Singapore pitcher Mathew Tan fired 17 strikeouts to help his team to a 9-8 victory over win-seeking South Africa in the first game that went to extra innings at the U-18 Men’s Softball World Cup on Tuesday, improving their win:loss card to 2:2. Tan now has a total of 31 strikeouts in the tournament.

Singapore leadoff hitter Mohammad Bin Mohammad collected 2 RBI and scored twice in the game for Singapore, including a crucial tying run in the ninth frame, to lead the offence of his team.

Singapore jumped ahead in the first, with a 2-out, 2-RBI double off the bat of Max Koh to plate Bin Mohammad and Zu Low for an immediate 2-0 lead.

South Africa tied the match after a pair of passed balls from catcher Shun Cheoh in the third and fourth innings, before Troy Botha hit a 2-out, bases-loaded single in the fifth to put his team in front in the scoreboard.

In the bottom of the sixth, Terrence Tay and Bin Mohammad, singled in a pair of runs each, to snatch the lead back at 6-4. However, Matthew Parkinson hit an RBI single with two outs, and Botha tied the game again with a triple to the far-left side to take the match to extra-inning.

After trading runs in the first extra frame, South Africa took the advantage in the ninth with a grounder by Botha (his fourth RBI of the game), but in the bottom of that frame Ignatius Ong tied it up with a single and Ean Eu ended the game with a walkoff triple to secure the second win of the tournament for Singapore.
