United States 4-2 Singapore: Winterhalder rallies United States past Singapore

The United States mounted a comeback as they scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat Singapore.

Ian Winterhalder sparked the United States’ 4-2 win over Singapore on Sunday at the U-18 Men’s Softball World Cup in Colquhoun Park in Palmerston North City in New Zealand.

The win, their second of the tournament, keeps the US in with a chance of finishing 10th with their game against South Africa on Saturday effectively a playoff for 10th and 11th.

Winterhalder scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first inning to get USA on the board, before Mohammad Bin Mohammad tied the game after Zu Ray Low’s doubled through to the left side in the top of the third inning.

One inning later, Singapore etched another run with Max Co hitting scoring off a sacrifice fly from Audric Chia to grab the lead 2-1.

A scoreless inning followed for both squads until Parker Hopkins scored for the deadlock 2-2 and Joshua Pernetti reached third base on a throwing error in the bottom of the sixth inning. USA notched another RBI on a Klayton Kilpatrick’s fielder’s choice that brought Pernetti to the home plate, to take a 3-2 lead. Finally, Kilpatrick scored USA’s fourth run after Brennan Ducharme grounded out.

Joshua Eurich earned the win for USA in a complete game performance, giving up 9 hits and 2 runs, with 1 walk and 1 strikeout. For Singapore, Mathew Tan was charged with the loss.
