Federation president Juan Núñez Nepumoceno, star slugger Juan Francisco and pitching coach Manny Garcia spoke about the preparation for the Olympic qualifier.

The president of the Dominican Baseball Federation (FEDOBE, Federación Dominicana de Béisbol ), Juan Núñez Nepumoceno, is impressed by the strength of the group of players competing for a roster spot for the WBSC Baseball Americas Qualifier to the Games of the XXXII Olympiad Tokyo 2020.

"We have players who have enjoyed a lot of success in their careers," commented Núñez Nepumoceno. "They have the attitude of the winners."

It will be a very competitive tournament, says Núñez Nepumoceno. "We still think we have the talent to qualify for the Olympics."

Juan Francisco, a 33-year corner infielder who appeared in 404 Major League Baseball (MLB) games over six season, is working out with a clear goal.

"We have a goal. We want to go to Florida and win all games. You can't afford to lose in this kind of tournament," he said.

Francisco is one of 40 players working out under manager Héctor Borg.

"This period is crucial. We need to get to Florida ready to play, both mentally and physically."

Nicknamed El Caballo Gigante (the Giant Horse), Francisco is the all-time home run leader in the Dominican Professional League with 77. He is regarded as one of the most powerful weapons of his National Team.

"Every player on the roster has value. We all share the same goal, which is winning. If we come together as a team, we are going to succeed."

Former minor league catcher and pitcher Manny Garcia is the pitching coach of the Dominican National Team.

"Things are going well. Our pitchers performed already in a live batting practice session. It's pretty early, but I can sense the enthusiasm. I believe we have a solid group of pitchers that can help us compete in Florida," Garcia said.

Next week Garcia will increase the workload of his pitchers.

"We will start playing split-squad games. We need to increase carefully the number of innings pitched, in particular for our projected starters."
