Dominican Republic reveals roster, jersey for Americas Olympic baseball qualifier

Players selected to the Dominican National Team include José Bautista, Melky Cabrera, 'Jumbo' Diaz, Radhames Liz, Julio Rodriguez, Jeison Guzman and Domingo Robles.

The Dominican Republic Baseball Federation (FEDOBE) held a press conference in Santo Domingo to unveil their 26-man national team roster and official jersey for the WBSC Baseball Americas Qualifier, which starts on 31 May in Florida.

World No. 10 Dominican Republic will be loaded with talent and experience for the Olympic qualifier.

  • PITCHERS (12) Raúl Valdés, Radhamés Liz, Domingo Robles, Jumbo Díaz, Dario Álvarez, Jairo Asencio, Williams Jerez, Lisalverto Bonilla, Emilio Vargas, Jhan Mariñez, Leuris Gómez, Román Méndez
  • CATCHERS (2) Charlie Valerio, Eduardo De Oleo
  • INFIELDERS (5) Aderlin Rodríguez, Juan Francisco, Gustavo Núñez, Diego Goris, Jeison Guzmán
  • OUTFIELDERS (7) Luis Liberato, Julio Y. Rodríguez, Melky Cabrera, José Bautista, Emilio Bonifacio, Yeison Asencio, Yefri Pérez

Utility players Luis Gonzalez and Anderson Féliz, in addition to pitchers Alexis Candelario and Ramón García, will serve as the backups.

José Jumbo Diaz, a 37-year old pitcher who has four years of Major League Baseball (MLB) service, received permission to participate from the Mexico City Diablos Rojos of the Mexican Baseball League (LMB).

Right-handed pitcher Radhamés Liz is another LMB currently under contract with the Leones de Yucatan.

Kansas City Royals infielder prospect Jeison Guzman, who represented his country in the WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup 2018 and the WBSC Premier12 2019.

Left-handed starting pitcher Domingo Robles left his Double-A club in the St. Louis Cardinals organization after two impressive starts and will also play for the Dominican Republic in the Qualifier.

Outfielders Jose Bautista, 40 years old, and Melky Cabrera, 36 years old, have a combined 3,500+ Major League Baseball (MLB) games during their stellar careers.

"I thank God for the opportunity to manage the national team," said Hector Borg. I'm impressed by the talent we have and also by the commitment."

The Dominican Republic will start in Group A of the WBSC Americas Qualifier, which will be staged in the Palm Beaches and St. Lucie Counties, Florida, from 31 May to 5 June.

Group A also includes: World No. 2 USA, No. 11 Puerto Rico and No. 15 Nicaragua.
