USA Baseball reveals 28 players for Olympic qualifier training camp

The 28-player group includes MLB experience and top prospects. Manager Mike Scioscia will announce the final 26-man roster on 30 May.

USA Baseball is brining 28 players to training camp ahead of the WBSC Baseball Americas Qualifier for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

US National Team Manager Mike Scioscia will announce the final 26-man roster on Sunday, 30 May. Here are the players set to report to camp:

PITCHERS (15): Clayton Andrews, Homer Bailey, Jonathan Bowlan, Brandon Dickson, Anthony Gose, Edwin Jackson, DJ Johnson, Trevor Lane, Matthew Liberatore, Drew Parrish, David Robertson, Joe Ryan, Marc Rzepczynski, James Sherfi, Simeon Woods Richardson.
CATCHERS (3): Tim Federowicz, Mark Kolozsvary, Matt Wieters
INFIELDERS (6): Nick Allen, Eddy Alvarez, Triston Casas, Logan Forsythe, Todd Frazier, Luke Williams
OUTFIELDERS (4): Jarren Duran, Eric Filia, Jon Jay, Matt Kemp

The roster features seasoned veterans such as Matt Kemp, who played 1,750 MLB games from 2006 to 2020, Homer Bailey, who started 245 MLB games in a 14-year career, or right-handed pitcher David Robertson, a reliever who appeared in 661 MLB games and represented the US in the World Baseball Classic 2017. Other players include top prospects Triston Casas, the WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup 2017 MVP, and Jarren Duran, both of whom are playing in the Boston Red Sox organization.

Veteran right-hander Brandon Dickson and 24-year old lefthander Clayton Andrews represented the US at the WBSC Premier12 2019. Dickon made the Premier12 All-World Team in the relief pitcher position.

Left-handed pitcher Matthew Liberatore helped the US shut out Korea in the final of the WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup 2017.

Lefty Drew Parrish played for the US Collegiate team in 2018.

The training camp roster includes infielder Eddie Alvarez, a 2014 Winter Olympics speed skating silver medallist with Team USA.

Scioscia's coaching staff includes bench coach Jerry Weinstein, pitching coach Dave Wallace, first base coach and hitting coach Ernie Young, third base coach Darren Fenster and bullpen coach Roly de Armas.

World No. 2 USA will compete in Group A and face No. 15 Nicaragua on 1 June, No. 10 Dominican Republic on 2 June and No. 11 Puerto Rico on 3 June.

Group B features world No. 7 Cuba, No. 8 Venezuela, No. 13 Canada and No. 14 Colombia.

World No. 1 Japan, No. 3 Korea, No. 5 Mexico and No. 18 Israel have already qualified for the six-team Tokyo 2020 Olympic baseball event.
