Winter and Summer Olympic medalist Eddy Alvarez returns to MLB
The switch-hitting utility infielder is one of only six athletes who have won a medal both in the WInter and the Summer Olympics.

Tokyo 2020 silver medalist Eddy Alvarez is back in the big leagues with Major League Baseball's Miami Marlins.

Alvarez, a 31-year-old switch-hitting utility infielder, made his MLB debut for the Marlins on 5 August 2020. He appeared in 12 games and was designated for assignment at the end of the 2020 season. He started the 2021 season on the Triple-A roster.

Alvarez started at second base in all of USA's six games at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. He went 6-for-24 (.250 batting average), with three runs batted in. He committed one error over 13 playing opportunities and made the WBSC Tokyo 2020 All-Olympic Team.

Alvarez served as one of two US flag bearers during the Tokyo 2020 opening ceremony.

Tokyo 2020 was not his only Olympic medal. Alvarez helped the US win a silver medal in speed skating at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics. He thus became one of six athletes, the third US representative, to win a medal in both the Winter and the Summer Olympics.
