Brazil beat Panama in extras, lead Placement Round with clean record
15/09/2022
After a beautiful pitching duel between starters Luis Aguilar and Paulo Noris, Brazil won it in the eighth when pinch hitter Paulo Barbosa scored both tie-break runners on a double.

Paulo Noris pitched a gem, and pinch hitter Paulo Barbosa got a critical extra-base hit in the top of the eighth, scoring both tie-break runners and helping Brazil beat Panama, 3-2.
Brazil remain the only team with a clean record (3-0) in the Placement Round. Panama now sit at 2-1.

Great efforts by the starting pitchers led the game to the eighth-inning tie-break. Noris allowed two hits, both to Panama's DH Eduardo Tait, while Panama's starter Luis Aguilar gave up only one, to catcher Julian Takeda.

Aguilar allowed the tie-break runners to advance on a balk, before being replaced by left-hander Armando Nunez.

Pinch hitter Paulo Barbosa got to the newcomer's first pitch and turned it into a two-RBI double. Noris batted in the third run on a single up the middle.

Henrique Kono took over for Noris in the bottom half of the frame. Shortstop Yeremy Lezcano welcomed him with a base hit. With runners at the corners, Luis Escudero hit a deep sacrifice fly to the left and scored a run. Pedro Catuy, the other tie-break runner, became the second out trying to steal third, but first baseman Alexander Chavez singled, bringing the tying run at the plate.

Kono retired Eric Guevara on a pop to first to end the game and save the win for Noris.
