It represents the second WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup bronze medal in history for Japan, and the nation’s sixth medal overall.

A pair of two-RBI singles from Shino Matsuo and Kai Watabe in the top of the second inning propelled Japan to a 6-2 win over Korea in the WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup Bronze Medal Game, giving the Japanese team their second bronze medal in history after finishing third in the 2017 edition having previously won two silver medals back-to-back.

Japan took the lead early in the game, scoring their six runs in the first two at bats of the game. Yuta Utsumi put the game 1-0 with an RBI single in the top of the first inning; and then Shino Matsuo and Kai Watabe produced four of Japan’s five runs in the second inning.

The two runs of Korea came in the bottom of the fourth. Dongheon Kim found Minsuk Kim on base, and rocketed a long home run over the left field fence to reduce the deficit to four runs.

However, Shiki Kawahara, who was named the top reliever of the tournament, tossed three scoreless of one-hit ball to close the game and secure the medal for his team.

The winning pitcher was Ayuta Seimori, who pitched four innings while allowing three hits, two runs, and two walks, while striking out two.

It's the first Japan had played Korea for bronze at the U-18 Baseball World Cup and the win confirmed a new podium in the history of the tournament with USA having beaten Chinese Taipei for the World Title earlier.
