Will Genevieve Beacom compete in the WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup?

Genevieve Beacom, the first girl to play professional baseball in Australia, was born in October 2004. She would be eligible for this year's WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup, which is set to take place from 9-18 September 2022 in Sarasota and Bradenton, Florida, USA.

"I went to the U-18 Camp last year," she said Beacom during the WBSC Global Game podcast.

The tournament was postponed.

"Playing in that World Cup is something I definitely wanna do," added Beacom. "Last year, it was an amazing camp to go to. I definitely want to make that team, try out for it. It would be such an honour."

Beacom answered questions by host Tyler Maun together with Peter Moylan, the former Major League Baseball (MLB) reliever who currently manager the Melbourne Aces of the Australian Baseball League (ABL) and got her signed as a development player.

"I watched her throw a bullpen, then I went back to watch her pitch in the local league when she actually threw against my old team," said Moylan. "I was impressed by what I saw then. The following week she threw another bullpen. I turned to [General Manager] Jon Deeble and said, look, we've got to figure this out because she deserves to be on the team."

Beacom also spoke about her short- and longer-term goals, such as finishing high school going to college in the US.

"I will be contacting coaches," she said "having that conversation about scolarship money. It's going to become more serious in the next year, before I finish high school."
