With the Baseball World Cup around the corner, we present 10 things baseball fans need to know about this global tournament.

National Teams will take the field on 23 September for the first WBSC Baseball World Cup played since 2019.

Here's 10 things to know about the event:

1. This will be the third edition of the U-23 Baseball World Cup. The first one was played in 2016 in Monterrey, Mexico, where Japan won the World Championship. Two years later, in Barranquilla and Monteria, Colombia, it was Mexico who won the world title.

2. This edition will be played in two Mexican baseball temples. Estadio Yaquis in Ciudad Obregón will host Group A and the Placement Round, while Estadio Sonora in Hermosillo will host Group B, the Super Round, the Bronze Medal Game and the Championship Game.

3. 12 National Teams will participate and will be divided in two groups.

  • Group A: Mexico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Chinese Taipei, Germany and Czech Republic
  • Group B: Venezuela, Colombia, Korea, Nicaragua, Netherlands and Panama.

4. Two games will open the tournament starting at the same time. In Ciudad Obregon, Germany will go up against Chinese Taipei, and in Hermosillo, Panama will face Colombia.

5. Due to the Covid pandemic, this tournament was originally scheduled for 2020. For this reason, 24-year-old players will be allowed to play in this edition of the U-23 World Cup.

6. The top 3 teams from each group will advance to the Super Round. Head to head results of Opening Round games between 3 nations that advance to the Super Round will carry over and will count to determine 4 nations qualified for Final Round as well as overall
competition standings.

7. An emerging nation like Germany and surprisingly a powerhouse like Cuba, will compete in a Baseball World Cup in this age group for the first time.

8. Mexico, Venezuela and Korea are the three nations in this edition that have previously medalled in the U-23 World Cup.

" It’s the highest honour in baseball to play for your country and we wanted to do everything possible to serve the athletes while preserving the integrity of the original 2020 event." -- WBSC President Riccardo Fraccari

9. 50 games will be played in the WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup across 9 days of action.

10. The highest ranked team in the tournament is No. 2 Korea, followed by Chinese Taipei (3), Mexico (5), Dominican Republic (6), Netherlands (8), Venezuela (10), Cuba (11), Panama (13), Nicaragua (14), Colombia (15), Czech Republic (16) and Germany (18).
