Crunching the numbers - A look at the statistics of the Super Round teams at the U-23 Baseball World Cup

With the WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup heading into the Super Round on Wednesday, all the statistics point to a pitcher's tournament with relatively little power on display. This indication comes from the analysis of the stats of the six teams that advanced to the Super Round - Mexico, Colombia, Cuba, Panama, Venezuela and Chinese Taipei.

Venezuela was the National Team with the best batting average (.331). No other team managed to surpass the .300 threshold. Colombia came pretty close (.290) and also has the most home runs with three. Chinese Taipei has the lowest batting average (.230).

The strongest hitters are both on the Colombian roster.

Gustavo Campero went 10-for-15 in the first five games with a batting average of .667. The 24-year-old switch hitter, is a New York Yankees minor leaguer.

Leandro Emiliani, 21, plays in the Washington Nationals organisation. He went 7-for-13 for a .538 batting average.

Nicaragua's Alvaro Rubi, 24, also has minor league experience in the US. He played at various levels for the Los Angeles Dodgers. So far, he has gone 6-for-12, a .500 batting average.

Chinese Taipei is the best pitching staff with a 1.06 earned run average (ERA). Two other National Teams allow less than two earned runs per game: Mexico (1.20) and Colombia (1.70). Panama has the highest ERA at 3.40.

Cuba leads in strikeouts (45) followed by Chinese Taipei (43). Colombia has the lowest number of walks (7) followed by Mexico (8).

Cuba's Naykel Cruz, the hero of Tuesday's elimination game against the Dominican Republic, leads in strikeouts (14) followed by Chih-ting Wang (10). Cruz, 22, plays for Matanzas in Cuba's Serie Nacional. Wang, 22, is a former minor leaguer.
