A two-RBI double by Kevin Zamudo was the prelude to a six-run sixth by the defending U-23 World Champions.

Mexico used a six-run sixth inning to vault past the Dominican Republic on Saturday night in Ciudad Obregon, winning on the third night of Group A play by a final score of 8-2.

While Mexico opened the scoring in the top of the fourth, the Dominican Republic took a 2-1 lead into the fifth courtesy of two hits and an error.

Kevin Lamas, Mexico's third baseman, tied the game at two in the top of the fifth, and the wheels came off the Dominican bullpen in the sixth.  Four pitchers yielded six runs on five hits and two walks, undoing the good work of starter Carlos Pena, who was charged with just one earned run in his five innings.

Mexico's starter, Alejandro Chavez, earned the victory with five solid innings of two-hit ball.  He did not allow an earned run and struck out four while issuing just one walk.

Kevin Zamudio delivered the big blow in the top of the sixth, snapping the 2-2 tie with a two run double.  Brandon Valenzuela put the game out of reach with a two-run single later in the frame.  He finished the game 2-for-4, while Eric Meza also went 2-for-4 with his own RBI double to lead Mexico's offense.

The Dominican Republic finished the game with just three hits and fell to 1-1 in the tournament.  They will try to bounce back in a matchup with the Czech Republic on Sunday afternoon.

Mexico will look to make it three straight victories on Sunday night when they take on a Chinese Taipei team with whom they are tied atop the Group A standings.
