Nicaragua on top of the WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup Placement Round

The leading National Team took off with a shut-out win against the Czech Republic. Korea beat the Dominican Republic, and the Netherlands defeated Germany.

The Netherlands, Nicaragua and Korea won on Day 1 of the WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup placement round.

Netherlands 5 Germany 2

Germany scored two in the first inning, but the Netherlands scored five unanswered runs to win 5-2 in the first game of the Placement Round. 

David Grimes and Luca Helber both delivered RBI singles for Germany in the first inning. Junior Martina tied the game with a double in the top of the fifth, and Dave Janssen drove in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly.

Shean Michel hit the game’s only home run, a solo shot in the top of the sixth, and Tyriq Kemp capped the scoring with an RBI double.  Martina, Michel and Kemp all collected two hits for the Netherlands.  Alexander Schmidt was 3-for-4 in the leadoff spot for Germany.  Kevin Bakker earned the win, tossing 3.2 innings of four-hit relief without allowing a run.

Nicaragua 3 Czech Republic 0

Nicaragua scored twice in the first on a Milkar Perez home run and added another run in the second en route to a 3–0 win over the Czech Republic.

Luis Montealto was 2-for-3 with a double for Nicaragua and Santos Jarquin was dominant on the mound, allowing just two hits in five innings.  The right-hander struck out 10.  Ondrej Satoria tossed a complete game in defeat for the Czech Republic, giving up three runs on seven hits and a walk.  He finished the day with two strikeouts.

Korea-Dominican Republic 10-4

World number two Korea snapped a 2-2 tie with a three-run top of the third and never looked back, defeating the Dominican Republic 10-4 on Wednesday night at Estadio Yaquis.

Korea’s leadoff man Kim Doyeong scored four runs and Kim Donghyeok was 3-for-3 with a home run, three runs scored and five runs batted in out of the two hole.  He finished a double shy of the cycle.  Lim Jongchan and Ko Myeongjun both chipped in with two RBIs. 

Ricardo Cespedes finished the game 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored for the Dominican Republic.
