A group of 46 players met at the Jackie Robinson Stadium in Managua, figthing for a spot in the final 24-man roster.

With 46 players in camp, the U-23 Nicaragua National Baseball Team opened camp yesterday in preparation for the WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup, to be held in Hermosillo and Ciudad Obregon, Mexico, from 23 September to 2 October. The group met at the Jackie Robinson Stadium in Managua.

Nicaragua manager Sandor Guido said they will pick 24 players from this group, but also that the National Federation is seeking permissions to add some professional players to the team, like Brandon Leyton, Ismael Munguía, Rodolfo Bone, Dilmer Mejía, Leo Crawford or Freddvil Chevez.

“It’s great to see this group of players. We have a lot of young talent in Nicaragua, with a lot of quality,” Guido said.

According to Guido, the first cut will be made next week, after a series of intra-squad games scheduled on Wednesday and Thursday. The players will also be evaluated during the national championship with their respective teams. “It will be very difficult to make the final 24-player roster,” he concluded.

Nicaragua went undefeated in the Americas Qualifier of the WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup to be crowned continental champions, edging Cuba 1-0 in the final.

The Nicaraguan U-23 National Baseball Team was recognised as the Americas’ “Team of the Year” by the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) America, as part of the AIPS America Awards 2020.
