Jack Besgrove tossed today his first no-hitter in a WBSC Men’s Softball World Cup, leading Australia to a 6-0 win over Venezuela on day 3 of the competition. The left handed pitcher struckout 14 in seven innnings of work, issuing three walks.

Australia scored their six runs in the first three innings. In the bottom of the first, they scored three runs off veteran starter Erick Urbaneja, who returned to Rosedale Park after winning the silver medal in the 2013 World Cup but could retire only one out today.

Eudomar Toyo surrenderred two more in the second with a two-run single off the bat of Marshall Kronk, while the last run of the game was scored in the third on a Julian Jemmott single.

Besgrove used 101 pitches to complete the game, 70 in the strike zone, and faced only 25 Venezuelan batters. He only gave up three base on balls and hit a batter in the game.

Australia has opened the world cup with three wins in a row and sits atop of Group B along with Canada, the other undefeated team in the pool. Venezuela’s record is now 1-2.

Quotes - Australia Coach Laing Harrow

"For me the best was for our pitcher Jack Besgrove – he had a tough night last night and for him to come out tonight and throw a no-hitter against the Venezuelans was a great effort from him.

"Our offense – we get runs early and I just love how we get runs early, the guys are up for the game and we set the tone for ourselves and I am very pleased with it.

"I think we can improve. At times we are chasing a few pitches which we were doing earlier so that is an area we can get a bit better on in the batter’s box.

"There’s a lot of positivity – the team culture – the boys have been excellent. We want to maintain that and focus on the processes.

"We are not looking ahead – we want to take the competition one day at a time, one game at a time. We have Canada tomorrow and probably will decide who is taking two wins into the Super Round.

"We’ve got to get up again – we are up against quality opposition and we need to prepare as best we can.

"We were loud the whole game which is a standout. A few guys got the opportunity to get into the box – I haven’t been able to do that for a bit so it was good to see that and of course to see the young fella out there throw a no-hitter was special to see."
