VI WBSC U-12 Baseball World Cup Day 8: Venezuela tops Dominican Republic, USA knocks out Chinese Taipei; Sunday's Final is set

Friday's games confirmed the World Championship matchup on Sunday, but Saturday's game between Venezuela and USA will determine which of the two teams is the home team in the Final.

The United States are 4-0 after the second day of the VI WBSC U-12 Baseball World Cup Super Round and clinched their spot in Sunday's World Championship Game. USA's win also put Venezuela in the Final. It's the first time Venezuela will play in the Final, while the US has won the WBSC U-12 World Title three times (2013, 2015 and 2017).

The games scheduled on Saturday, 6 August, the final day of the Super Round, will determine who is the home team in the final and who plays for the bronze medal. They will also determine the 7th-11th place standings.

Chinese Taipei @ USA

The United States defeated Chinese Taipei, 8-6, in dramatic fashion and earned the right to play in Sunday's World Championship Game. It's the first time since the creation of the U-12 World Cup that host Chinese Taipei is not in the Final.

Po Yuan Chuang scored in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly to left by Tzu Chiao Ou to put Chinese Taipei ahead, 1-0.

Colin Anderson homered off starter Sheng Zhi Wu on a towering fly to left to reverse the lead. USA-Chinese Taipei 2-1 in the bottom of the first.

The umpiring crew delayed the game at the end of the first under heavy rain.

As the game resumed, the US lost two runners at home plate in the bottom of the second.

Chinese Taipei reversed the lead in the top of the third. Po Yuan Chuang hit a lead off double, the first Chinese Taipei hit of the night, and Rui Xin Chen homered to deep left field, giving the hosts a 3-2 lead.

Chinese Taipei loaded the bases on three singles and scored their fourth run as second baseman Chen En grounded into a double play.

In the bottom of the fourth, first baseman Anthony Frausto hit a grand slam to give back the lead to the US.

The US bullpen struggled in the top of the fifth. Cristian Matos couldn't get an out. Levi Kerr allowed a hit on a comebacker and a wild pitch that helped Chinese Taipei tie the game, 6-6.

The US took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth. Maximus Villalva hit an RBI single and another run scored on a groundout.

Levi Kerr got the three final outs in the top of the sixth.

Venezuela-Dominican Republic 12-5

Earlier in the day, Venezuela used 13 hits, including three home runs, to beat the Dominican Republic, 12-5, and improve to 3-1 in the Super Round. Venezuela would await the result of TPE-USA, hoping for a US victory.

Left-hander Gerson Guzman and his defence were off a shaky start. Jose Ramos hit a two-RBI double with one out.

Catcher Daniel Perez added a double and sent Guzman to the showers. Before reliever Jorge Jimenez could get the third out, Venezuela's lead increased to 5-0.

Juan Perez lead off the third with a solo home run to center to make it 6-0.

Jimenez left after allowing the seventh run, but left fielder Alex Rodriguez welcomed reliever Enmanuel Castro with a three-run homer to center which opened the score to 10-0.

The Dominican Republic took advantage of three sloppy defensive plays to build a five-run bottom of the third, higlighted by a grand slam by center fielder Miguel Grullon.

Salomon Millan homered in the top of the fifth to make it 11-5.

Venezuela added an insurance run in the top of the sixth.

Korea-Mexico 4-1

Korea beat Mexico, 4-1 and tied them at 1-3 in the VI WBSC U-12 Baseball World Cup Super Round.

Center fielder Doyul Lee singled off starter Jonathan Beltran with one out in the top of the first, advanced on a couple of wild pitches and scored on a groundout to put Korea ahead of Mexico, 1-0.

Catcher Yeachan Kim homered with one out and a full count in the top of the second to extend the lead to 2-0.

Shortstop Seunghyun Park and pitcher Woochan Jung hit solo home runs in the top of the third to extend Korea's lead to 4-0 and force Mexico to call Edgar Melgar from the bullpen.

Korea's starter Woochan Jung got out of a fourth inning bases-loaded jam as he got center fielder Dereck Lopez on strikes.

Reliever Seungwoo An loaded the bases and allowed a run on a balk. Korea gave the ball to Juwon Jung, who closed the game with back to back strike outs.
