Australia top Hong Kong, China to finish fourth in WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup Group A

The Asians had a two-run lead in the top of the fifth, when Australia mounted the comeback to take the lead.

Australia came from behind in the second part of the game to overcome Hong Kong, China 9-2 in their final game of the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup Group A. The Asian side had a two-run lead in the top of the fifth, when Australia mounted the comeback to take the lead.

Hong Kong, China scored twice in the bottom of the third. After two quick outs, How Ken Chan hit a single and then leadoff hitter Wing Hin Ng walked to put two runners on base. They both scored on two consecutive errors, in consecutive plays, by the Australian defense. 

Yin Sum Kwong pitched well for 4.2 innings, with no hits and no runs allowed. However, Australia mounted a two-out rally in the fifth to take the lead. Three consecutive singles and a two-run double by Claire O'Sullivan gave the Australians the lead in the game. The Hong Kong, China starter was the losing pitcher, giving up three hits, three runs and three walks, with five strikeouts.

In the top of the seventh, Australia took total control of the game with a six-run rally, including an RBI double by Morgan Doty, to clinch the win.

The winner of the game was Maddison Tabrett, who tossed 2.2 frames with one strikeout and one hit.

Australia finished fourth place in the group, with a 2-3 record, while Hong Kong, China ended in fifth place (1-4).
