Canada beat Korea in five innings, clinch second-place finish in Group A

Julia Konigshofer homered in her first official at-bat in the Canadian uniform and ended the game with four RBIs.

Canada closed Group A of the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup with a 10-0 victory against Korea in five innings, clinching second place in the final standings. Julia Konigshofer homered in her first official at-bat in the Canadian uniform and ended the game with four RBIs.

On Sunday, Canada's trio of 17-year-olds - Sarah Pengelly, Emma-Rose Payette and Konigshofer - all saw action against Korea.

Sarah Pengelly struck out 10 in five innings of work for Canada, giving up one hit and two walks and earning her first win of the tournament in her first appearance.

Waverly native Konigshofer, who also made her World Cup debut last Wednesday as Canada's winning pitcher against Hong Kong, China, was prolific on offence against Korea as she belted a two-run homer to put Canada in front.

After a scoreless first inning, Canada scored in their next four at-bats to finish the game with a walk-off single by Emma-Rose Payette in the fifth. Payette recorded three RBIs in the game.

With the win, Canada secured second place in the Group A final standings with a 4-1 record. Korea finished last with no wins in five games.
