Meet Thunder Bay, host of the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup Group A

Located along the northwest shoreline of Lake Superior, the city takes its name from the bay at the head of Lake Superior and is considered the sunniest city in eastern Canada.

Starting from Tuesday, Thunder Bay, Ontario, will again become the epicentre of international baseball, with the opening day of the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup Group A.

Let’s take a look at the beautiful Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, now a three-time Baseball World Cup host.

Located along the northwest shoreline of Lake Superior, the city takes its name from the bay at the head of Lake Superior and is considered the sunniest city in eastern Canada. As the largest city in Northwestern Ontario, with almost 110,000 people living in Thunder Bay, the city is the region's commercial, administrative and medical centre.

The largest city on Lake Superior, Thunder Bay is easy to get to by air with the Thunder Bay International Airport handling the third largest volume in Ontario behind Toronto and Ottawa.  It is less than a two hour flight by jet from the major international airports of Toronto and Winnipeg. With the Trans-Canada Highway connection and its location in the centre of Canada, Thunder Bay is accessible to all types of travellers.

Thunder Bay hosted the WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup twice, in 2010 and 2017. The staging of the XXVIII WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup 2017 in Thunder Bay, helped break the all-time monthly passenger record at the Thunder Bay International Airport (TBIAA) in August, with 81,003 passengers.

The WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup will see 15 games played between Baseball Central and Port Arthur Stadium. Both stadiums were renovated to meet international standards for the 2010 U-18 Baseball World Cup. Baseball Central will host the first two days of competition, with Port Arthur hosting the rest of the games.

Owned by the City of Thunder Bay, Baseball Central was initiated in 1987. Meanwhile Port Arthur Stadium opened on July 14 1951, and is currently home to the Thunder Bay Border Cats Baseball organization of the Northwoods League.
