Big second inning gives Australia first win of the tournament

Australia sent nine hitters to the plate in the second inning to take a comfortable 6-2 lead.

Behind a complete-game performance by their ace Jack Besgrove, and a five-run second inning, Australia claimed on Saturday a first-up win of the WBSC U-23 Men's Softball World Cup against Singapore, 7-3

Singapore had scored a run in their first two innings to take an early 2-1 lead, but Australia sent nine hitters to the plate in the second inning to take a comfortable 6-2 lead. Ryan King doubled-in a pair of runs and Ashley Goffer brought in two more in this inning.

One inning later, Ean Eu homered in the third inning for Singapore, making it 5-3, but Australia answered with a solo home run off the bat of Cody Smith.

Besgrove struck out 14 opponents, while allowing four hits, three walks and three runs.

Mathew Tan was charged with the loss after four innings of work. He was responsible for seven Australia runs, with four hits and three walks.
