WBSC Women's Softball World Cup Group A - Australia beat Chinese Taipei in only game played on day four due to weather conditions

The schedule for the final day of the Opening Round had four games originally scheduled to complete the Opening Round on Friday starting with Chinese Taipei v Australia, followed by Botswana v Great Britain, Great Britain v USA and USA v Ireland. Only the first game of the day between Chinese Taipei and Australia took place due to the adverse weather conditions.

World No. 9 Australia beat No. 3 Chinese Taipei 5-0 in the only game to be played on Day Four of the WBSC Women's Softball World Cup Group A in Balbriggan, Ireland on Friday, which saw three of the four last Opening Round games cancelled.

The first game of the day between Australia and Chinese Taipei started on time at 10:00 but after one inning it was stopped as heavy rain and wind set in with Australia leading 2-0. The game got back underway at 18:30 under misty sky, with Australia running out convincing winners to book third place in the standings.

With the cancellation of the remaining pool games - Botswana v Great Britain, Great Britain v USA and USA v Ireland - which do not affect the final standings of the round robin to determine pairings for the Playoff Round, the tournament heads into the Playoffs on Saturday to find out who will claim the two tickets on offer to the WBSC Women's Softball World Cup Finals next year in Italy. Chinese Taipei v Australia

Play gets underway on time with both teams needing to win this game to sit third on the table. In the event tomorrow's Playoffs can't be played for any reason, the result of this game could potentially determine who sits in the wild card spot. Read more about the wild card process here.

Australia get on the board at their first turn at bat with Kylie Steemers and Jade Wall both hitting ground balls past pitcher Ya Ting Tu to score Tamieka Whitefield and Taylah Tsitsikronis.

With Chinese Taipei about to start at the top of the second inning, the rain became heavier and at 10:23 the game was stopped due to the weather. For the Tournament Regulations, click here.

At 11:00 the game has been delayed until further notice as the rain continues to come down very heavily. An evaluation of when play will restart will take place this afternoon, weather permitting.

12:00 Rain continues to fall. Check the latest weather forecast here. Potentially starting to clear around 17:00.

13:00 Rain still falling. Considering the forecast, hoping to be able to restart this evening but it is all dependent on the weather. Still no play and no announcement of an official restart time.

16:30 Following a field inspection the WBSC Women's Softball World Cup Organizing Committee has confirmed that Game #12 of the Opening Round between Chinese Taipei and Australia will resume at 18:00 local time weather permitting.

17:40 Unfortunately the wind and rain hasn't abated as much as expected so the game has been delayed a further 30 minutes to 18:30.

Play back underway.

Australia extend their lead in the bottom of the third with a Stacy McManus single up the middle to score Georgia Hood before Clare Warwick and McManus get home to give Australia a 5-0 after three.

Great to see the sun come out as play enters the bottom of the fifth with Australia still leading 5-0 and the score stayed the same with Chia-Wen Shen grounding out in the top of the seventh to give Australia the win.

Pregame
