10 things to know about the IX WBSC Women's Baseball World Cup

The IX Women's Baseball World Cup-Group B presented by CARNEXT starts on 13 September. Take a look at these 10 key points that will guide you through the event.

It's time to find out more about the IX WBSC Women's Baseball World Cup - Group B presented by CARNEXT as this amazing event, which will conclude the Group Stage of the IX WBSC Women's Baseball World Cup after Group A was played in Thunder Bay, Canada last month, is scheduled to open on Wednesday, 13 September.

1. This is the first-ever WBSC Baseball World Cup, in any category, to be played using the new Two-Stage Format. After Groups A and B, scheduled this year, the Finals will be played in Thunder Bay, Canada, in 2024.

2. From 13 to 17 September 2023, Japan will host the Women's Baseball World Cup for the third time. In 2008, World No. 1 Japan started their winning streak in Matsuyama, the capital city of Ehime Prefecture on Shikoku Island. Canada finished second. Japan also won in 2014 in Miyazaki, the capital of the Miyazaki Prefecture on the island of Kyushu. The United States earned a silver medal.

3. Venezuela are the other team from Group B to earn Women's Baseball World Cup hosting rights. They organised the fourth edition in Maracay in 2010 and finished fourth behind Japan, Australia and USA.

4. Madonna Japan won their sixth consecutive Women's Baseball World Cup at the last edition in 2018 in Viera, USA. The United States won the other two editions in 2004 in Edmonton, Canada, and 2006 in Taipei City. In both occasions, Japan finished second.

5. When they take the field against No. 5 Venezuela on Wednesday, 13 September, World No. 16 France will become the 16th baseball programme to participate in the Women's Baseball World Cup since the tournament was inaugurated in 2004.

6. Five programmes have participated in all eight editions of the WBSC Women's Baseball World Cup: Australia, Canada, Japan, Chinese Taipei and USA. Cuba, Hong Kong-China, Pakistan and Venezuela follow with five participations.

7. Miyoshi is a city in the Hiroshima Prefecture, about 84 kilometres from the capital. It has a population of 49,106. Miyoshi is located in the middle of the Chugoku region, with the Chugoku Mountains to the north and a flat agricultural area to the south.

8. The 15 games of Group A will be played in Miyoshi Kinsai Stadium. The 16,000-seat stadium opened on 25 April 2009. The field has artificial turf. Three games are scheduled for each day of the competition. Monday, 18 September, is a makeup day if needed.

9. Six teams will compete in the IX WBSC Women's Baseball World Cup Finals in 2024. World No. 3 Canada, No. 4 USA and No. 12 Mexico advanced from Group A. The top three finishers of Group B will earn their spots and complete the set of participants for the Finals.

10. Japan shut out Chinese Taipei in the 2018 Women's Baseball World Cup final giving Chinese Taipei their first-ever Women's Baseball World Cup medal. The only other participants (other than Japan, USA, Canada and Chinese Taipei) to make the podium in previous editions are Australia (silver medallists in 2010 and bronze in 2014) and Venezuela (bronze in 2016).
