12U BWC: Panama to play for 5th after Vega’s Gem

Panama holds off Brazil 3-1 to play for fifth place at 12U Baseball World Cup

Youth Park/Taipei City. Panama will take on Korea on Sunday in the game for fifth place at Youth Park. In the second classification game on Saturday at Youth Park, the Central Americans defeated Brazil 3-1. Ariel Vega led Panama to the win with a complete game two-hitter. Brazil will take on Mexico in the game for seventh place.

Ariel Vega dominated through the entire six innings. He sat down the first 12 batters of the game in order. Only in the fifth and the sixth Brazil was able to get on base, using an error in the fifth to score their lone run of the game. In the end Vega had allowed just two hits and an unearned run, while striking out four.

Vega also was responsible for the first run of the contest, plating Rennie Arjona with a single in the second. A series of errors led to their second run in the third. Derek Arroyo tripled and scored on a wild pitch for a 3-0 lead in the fourth. Brazil only was able to avoid the shutout, as Eric Taniguchi crossed the plate on a throwing error of the catcher in the bottom of the fifth.

Brazil will take on Mexico at 9am on Sunday morning, while Panama plays Korea at 1pm. Both games are set for Youth Park.
