The first round at the 2012 European Championship in the Netherlands is in the books. The preliminary round robin ended on Tuesday with six games. Italy, Spain and Sweden from Group A and the Netherlands, Germany and Czech Republic from Group B made it into the medal round, which will be played in another round robin format.
Defending champion Italy is entering the second round with a 2-0 record and favorite to reach the Gold Medal Game. Spain, the Netherlands, Germany and the Czech Republic follow with 1-1 records, while Sweden is the underdog at 0-2.
On Tuesday Italy kept its clean slate, remaining undefeated in five games, shutting out Russia 10-0 in their last preliminary round game. Spain with a 6-0 win over Croatia and Sweden with a 5-3 victory over Greece followed into the second round from Group A.
In Group B the Netherlands clinched first place with a 4-1 record thanks to an 11-2 rout over Great Britain. Germany also won its fourth game, beating France with an 8-3 victory. In the third matchup the Czech Republic blew out Belgium 12-3 en route to their third win.
The second round will start on Thursday with Italy taking on Germany, Sweden facing the Netherlands and Spain squaring off with the Czech Republic. Already on Wednesday the classification round will be played, as ranks 7th to 12th in final standings will be decided.
