The second round at the 2012 European Championship in the Netherlands started with three games on Thursday. In the afternoon Spain used a hit by pitch with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the tenth to down the Czech Republic 6-5. It was a back-and-forth battle with a couple of lead changes. Matej Hejma went 4-for-4 with a homerun for the Czech squad. Paco Figueroa and Jesus Golindano combined for four RBI for Spain.
In the evening four Dutch players crossed the plate three times in a 17-1 blowout win over Sweden. The record title holder scored five runs in the second, four in the third and seven in the sixth to celebrate a lopsided victory. Meanwhile Tiago Da Silva struck out ten in eight scoreless innings to lead defending champion Italy to a 3-0 shutout over Germany. It was a true pitcher’s duel, as Germany’s Luke Sommer matched Da Silva for the first five-plus frames.
