Germany, Czech Republic to host European Championship in September of 2014

The Czech Baseball Association (CBA) announced that they have reached an agreement with the Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg that the Armin-Wolf-Arena will host a first-round group at the 2014 European Championship. Two Czech cities – Prague, Brno, Trebic or Ostrava – will join Regensburg as hosts. One of them will host the other first-round pool, the other the final round.

“We are very grateful to CEB [Confederation of European Baseball] for approval and its flexibility to change the schedule so that the first round can be played in two cities in two different countries, which is in my opinion main advantage of the tournament. By the cooperation with Regensburg, we can ensure more attractive games for spectators,” said Petr Ditrich, President of the Czech Baseball Association.

“We are looking forward to work with the Czech Federation and will do our part to make the European Championship in September 2014 a big success. European Championship in two countries has a special appeal. Czech Republic as well as Germany can show what they are made of in front of their home crowds,” said Armin Zimmerman, Vice President of the German Baseball and Softball Federation and Executive Director of the Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg.

The tournament is scheduled to be played in September next year. Group A consists of Croatia, Czech Republic, Greece, Russia, Spain and the Netherlands. Group B, which will be hosted by Regensburg, is set with Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, defending champion Italy and Sweden.

Great Britain and Russia were the last two teams to qualify for the European Championship, winning the B-Level Euros in Zurich and Vienna last week. In 2012 Haarlem, Rotterdam and Utrecht hosted the European Championship with Italy defeating the Netherlands in the Gold Medal Game.
