2015 Asia Insurance ‘Phoenix Cup’ expands to 10 teams, crowns Women’s Baseball champion

HONG KONG — Defending champion Osaka University of Health and Sports Sciences successfully defended the Asia Insurance Phoenix Cup 2015 crown, overpowering fellow Japanese side Far East Bloomers 23:2 in the championship game.

HONG KONG — Defending champion Osaka University of Health and Sports Sciences successfully defended the Asia Insurance Phoenix Cup 2015 crown, overpowering fellow Japanese side Far East Bloomers 23:2 in the championship game.

The Phoenix Cup is an annual WBSC Hong Kong International Women’s Baseball Tournament hosted by the Hong Kong Baseball Association.

Twenty-five international contests led to the crowning of the 2015 Phoenix Cup champion, as Osaka University of Health and Sports Sciences excelled in the four-day tournament.

Hosts Hong Kong Allies finished the tournament in 5th place. Allies catcher Lau Tsz-chin said, “Hopefully, the younger players will gain some experience from this year’s tournament and come back stronger and better next year.”

Mr. Philip Li, Honorary President of the Hong Kong Baseball Association said:

“I want to thank the Hong Kong SAR Government and Asia Finance for their unwavering support to the Phoenix Cup. We will continue to do our best and contribute to the hopeful return of baseball back into the Olympics family.”

Mr. Jonathan McKinley, Deputy Secretary of Home Affairs said:

“I am glad to witness more than 100 players coming from Japan, Korea, Australia, Chinese Taipei and Singapore to compete in this year’s Phoenix Cup. The Hong Kong SAR Government will continue to support local baseball teams and players, and look forward to see them competing in different major tournaments.”

Baseball Australia earned the bronze medal and was represented by its National Team, which also won the bronze in the 2014 WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup.
