Covering about 160,000 square meters, the centre will become China's largest baseball-softball facility that meets international standards.

Construction for China's new baseball-softball megacentre started this past Sunday in Shaoxing city, located southeast of Hangzhou, host city of the 2022 Asian Games.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of October 2021, with a total investment of around 1.8 billion yuan (about 254 million U.S. dollars), according to Xinhua, China's state-run news agency.

At the end of May, representatives from the Chinese Baseball Association and Chinese Softball Association made a site inspection to get an overview of the project, which consists of two baseball fields and two softball fields.

Women's softball made its Asian Games debut in 1990 in the Chinese capital Beijing, while men's baseball was a demonstration sport the same year. Both have been on the programme ever since.

The Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games will be the 19th edition and is scheduled to take place from September 10 to 25, 2022.
