New Amazon Prime series based on women's baseball, A League of Their Own is coming soon

Set in the height of World War II, the television series will follow a group of professional women's baseball players in the newly established league.

Women's baseball is the subject of a new Amazon Prime Video series that's coming out soon.

A League of Their Own, a series created by Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson and based on the 1992 hit film of the same name, will be available from 12 August.

A world premiere screening is scheduled for the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City on 13 June.

The 1992 movie by the late Penny Marshall celebrated the All American Girls Professional League (AAGPBL).

WBSC celebrated the 25th anniversary of the movie during the Women's Baseball World Cup 2018.

The late Shirley Burkovich, who played from 1949 through 1951 in the League, attended the games.

“These girls play great baseball. It’s a lot of fun to watch” she commented.

Burkovich said she enjoyed a lot Penny Marshall’s movie: “Before that movie, nobody knew who we were” she laughed.

Born in 1933, she was only 16 when she was drafted: “I have always played baseball. I have no memory of playing any other sport. I played with boys, I played with my father. When I read there were tryouts for women’s baseball, I went right away. A few weeks later I got an invitation to Spring Training.”

Burkovich died on 31 March in Rancho Mirage, California. Her dream to give more girls the opportunity to play baseball is alive.

Sue Parsons Zipay, who played in the AAGPBL final two seasons (1953 and 1954), founded American Girls Baseball, an affiliate organization of the AAGPBL Players Association, intending to create a professional women's baseball league in the United States.

During a webinar that celebrated International Women's Day 2022, Hiroko Yamada, who chairs the WBSC Women's Baseball Commission, highlighted the increase in women's baseball role models and the crucial role in encouraging more women to play.
