Africa: Egypt stages Baseball5 National Championship as the sport continues global push

Alexandria won amongst the boys, Cairo earned first place in the girls tournament. The Egyptian National Baseball Softball Federation praised the "distinguished organization".

The Egyptian Baseball5 National Championship was staged, as baseball and softball continue their global evolution, with the young five-on-five discipline -- requiring only a ball -- helping the sport to break barriers and be practiced in new territories.

Egypt's first Baseball5 Champions

The teams from Alexandria (boys) and Cairo (girls, pictured above) were crowned Egypt's national champions in Baseball5.

The championship had a preliminary phase on 6 and 7 November. The games were played at the Doctors Club in Alexandria.

A total of 10 teams representing different Egyptian Governorates qualified for the final day on 20 November. The games were played in Cairo at the Education Directorate. The tournament involved 80 players and 20 coaches.

Giza, also honoured with the Fair Play award, finished second behind Alexandria in the boys tournament. Qalyubia earned third place, whule Damietta finished fourth and Menoufia finished fifth.

Ismaila earned second place behind Cairo in the girls tournament. The third place team was Port Said, while Dakahlia finished fourth and Matrouh fifth.

The Egyptian Baseball Softball Federation praised the "distinguished organization" of the event.
