Amazon Prime to launch series inspired by movie on Women's Baseball

The 25th anniversary of 'A League of their own', directed by the late Penny Marshall, was celebrated during the WBSC Women's Baseball World Cup 2018. Former player Shirley Burkovic: "Before that movie, nobody knew who we were."

The USA hosted at USSSA SpacePort Complex in Viera, Florida, the WBSC Women's Baseball World Cup 2018, thus celebrating the 25th anniversary of the movie A League of Their Own. The 1992 film, directed by Penny Marshall, starring Tom Hanks, Geena Davis and Madonna, celebrated the All American Girls Professional Baseball League of the 1940s.

Shirley Burkovic, who played from 1949 through 1951 in the All American Girls League attended some games in Viera together with former teammate Maybelle Blair and remembered: "Before that movie, nobody knew who we were."

Director Penny Marshall died at the age of 75 in December 2018.

The All American Girls Professional Baseball League will be brought back to public attention. Amazon Prime will produce a series inspired by the 1992 movie. The series is co-created by Abbi Jacobson, the co-creator of Comedy Central's Broad City, who will also star in the series, and director Will Graham.

"Will and Abbi have taken a classic movie, reimagining it for a new generation with new characters and their own fresh, modern vision on a timeless story of big dreams, friendship, love, and, of course, baseball," Vernon Sanders, co-head of television for Amazon Studios, told Variety.com.

The cast, besides Jacobson, includes Chanté Adams, alongside D’Arcy Carden, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Kelly McCormack, Roberta Colindrez, and Priscilla Delgado, with recurring guest stars Molly Ephraim, Kate Berlant and Melanie Field.

A League of Their Own - the series - is produced by Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television in association with Field Trip Productions.

The Amazon series will be the second attempt to reboot the Penny Marshall movie. The first attempt by CBS aired six episodes in 1993.
