Andrew Mokoto, ‘The Godfather of Botswana Softball’, passes away at 80

Mokoto was one of the founders of the Botswana Softball Association in 1977 and served for 19 years as its first president.

Andrew Pusetso Mokoto, founding member of the Botswana Softball Association and the organisation’s first president, passed away on 13 April. Mokoto, known as “The Godfather of Botswana Softball”, was a member of the Botswana National Sports Council, and a Treasurer of the Botswana National Olympic Committee.  

Born on 3 July 1941, Mokoto was the first president of the Botswana Softball Association, a position he maintained for 19 years. 

In 1980, he was one of the driving forces behind the construction of the National Softball Diamond in Gaborone. In 1984, the Botswana National Men’s Softball Team participated for the first time in a WBSC World Championship. 

He won twice the prestigious Botswana National Sports Commission (BNSC) Sports Administrator of the Year Award (1983, 1987) for his contributions and service to the game of softball.
