Argentina tops Brazil to win South American Women’s Softball Championship on home soil

A four-run seventh inning broke a 4-4 tie for Argentina, and propelled the home team to the regional title.

World No. 48 Argentina surprised No. 16 Brazil, 8-5, in the final of the XV South American Women’s Softball Championship held this past weekend at Estadio de la Victoria in Buenos Aires. It’s the second time Argentina has won the South American title, after 37 years of waiting. All games were live-streamed on YouTube.

A four-run seventh inning broke a 4-4 tie for Argentina, and propelled the home team to the regional crown. The winning pitcher of the final was Mariana Gorosito, who was named the Best Pitcher of the Tournament. Argentina’s Emily Burgos was the MVP.

No. 51 Curaçao eliminated No. 22 Peru on Friday, at the beginning of the page system playoff. Brazil advanced to the final with a 6-2 win over Argentina in the first semifinal; and then Argentina beat Curaçao, 3-1, in the second semifinal of the tournament, setting up the final against Brazil. No. 36 Guatemala grabbed fifth place after winning topping Argentina's U-21 squad, 7-6.

The previous South American title for Argentina was in 1985, also playing at home in Buenos Aires.
