Asian Games Baseball: Super Round set as China, Chinese Taipei advance undefeated

The hosts stunned Japan in Group A’s last game to clinch first place; Chinese Taipei shutout Korea to win Group B. All four will battle for the three medals.

The Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games baseball competition will enter its decisive phase with the four qualified teams for the Super Round ready to battle for a spot in the podium. Hosts China and Chinese Taipei has won their groups and advanced to the Super Round with a 1-0 record, while Japan and Korea will start with 0-1.

In Group A, China claimed a historic 1-0 win over Japan on Tuesday to clinch Group A’s first place. Xiang Wang tossed five quality innings of one-hit ball to earn the win. Xudi Suo, Changlong Su, Ningji Li and Chaoqun Zheng came out from the bullpen to take care of one inning each and complete the shutout. China’s only run was scored in the second frame, with a Pei Liang bases-loaded RBI single. The Chinese leadoff hitter went 2-for-4 in the game. It was China’s first-ever win over Japan in baseball history.

The key match in Group B was Chinese Taipei’s 4-0 victory over Korea. Three pitchers combined for the shutout with Yu-Min Lin tossing six innings with four hits and six strikeouts. Ruei-Yang Gu Lin (two innings) and Chih-Jung Liu (one inning) completed the last three innings of the game. 

The Super Round will open on Thursday, with games between Japan vs Korea and Chinese Taipei vs China. The Super Round will close on Friday. The medal games are scheduled on Saturday. You can see the full schedule and results of the tournament here.

The Philippines; Hong Kong, China; Laos and Thailand will play the Placement Round.
