Assaf Lowengart: First Israel-born baseball player to sign professional contract

The 26-year-old, who represented his country in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and the 2023 World Baseball Classic, signed for the New York Boulders of the independent Frontier League.

Assaf Lowengart signed a contract for the New York Boulders of the independent Frontier League, thus becoming the first player born in Israel to compete in professional baseball.

Born on March 1st 1998, in Timorim, a moshav shitufi (cooperative village) in central Israel, Lowengart attended Sullivan Community College (New York State) in 2020 and played for the Mansfield University of Pennsylvania in 2021 and 2022.

He helped Israel qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and appeared in three games in Tokyo. He also represented Israel at the 2023 World Baseball Classic and the 2023 European Championship, where he was the starting second baseman and posted a .273 batting average.
