Baquera homers, Mexico beats Japan

The win against world number 1 Japan doesn’t change the course for Mexico in the super round. Korea will advance to the bronze medal game, thanks to the 7-0 win on Day 1 of group play

Mexico beat Japan 8-3 to finish the super round tied at 2-3 with Korea. The 7-0 win that Korea earned in Day 1 of group play is worth a trip to the bronze medal game against Cuba. Juan Zavarce earned the win, Sebastian Baquera homered.

Japan scored first against Juan Zavarce on a triple by catcher Takuto Suzuki and starter Yusei Izumi pitched three scoreless innings.

Ren Imai took the mound in the fourth and allowed three unearned runs. Center fielder Yustin Canizales made Japan pay a two-out defensive error with a double to right centre.

Mexico took the lead in the fifth against Hisato Shigematsu, scoring three runs on a double by shortstop Edwin VIllacencio and a base hit by Marlon Hoyos.

In the sixth, Kazuki Takahata gave up two more runs on three hits, including a home run by Sebastian Baquera.

Juan Zavarce went 5.1 innings without allowing another run and earned the win.
