Sydney 2000 gold medallist Sean Burroughs died after suffering a heart attack in a parking lot in Long Beach, California. He would have celebrated his 44th birthday in September.

Burroughs, a left-handed hitting third baseman, played at Double-A for the San Diego Padres when he earned a spot on the USA roster for the Sydney Olympics. He appeared in three games for manager Tom Lasorda and helped the United States to a historic gold medal, going 3-for-7 with a run batted in (RBI) in the preliminary round.

He made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut for the San Diego Padres on 2 April 2002. He appeared in 528 games over seven seasons (2002-2012; he also played for the Tampa Bay Rays, Arizona Diamondbacks and Minnesota Twins), posting a .278 career batting average.
