Bhutan stages inaugural U-18 Baseball League and Winter Camp

The Bhutan Baseball Softball Association launched a U-18 baseball league in August 2022 and plans to add more youth baseball and softball competition and a men's baseball adult league within 2023.

The Bhutan Baseball and Softball Association (BBSA) held its 2023 Baseball & Softball Winter Camp for 40 boys and girls in the 8-17 age bracket from 2-7 January at the Motithang Higher Secondary School sports field in Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan.

The camp is part of a BBSA development plan to encourage boys and girls to learn how to play baseball and softball - two of the fastest-growing sports in Bhutan, the federation said.

“We are having a blast,” commented BBSA International Coach Marvin Moore, a native of Texas, USA, who introduced Bhutanese players to "national-team style training sessions".

“We have a lot of kids who have excellent potential to develop into some really good baseball and softball players,” he added.

On 27 August the BBSA launched its first U-18 baseball league. The seven-team league finished on 13 November with Royal Bhuta Bodyguard Youth coming from behind to win the final, 13-12, against Dechencholing Higher Secondary School. Thimphu beat Toba Lower Secondary School, 9-4, to claim third place.

"The U-18 league was basically a beginner course for both players and Bhutanese coaches," said Moore. "The focus was just on the rules of the game and the basic fundamentals, and we wanted the kids just to have fun playing baseball:"

BBSA plans to launch U-8, U-10, U-12 and U-15 baseball and softball leagues in the country's spring, summer and autumn. The MyBhutan men's baseball league will debut in September.
