Brazil beats Argentina to win South American Baseball Championship, earns ticket to 2023 Pan Am Games

The Brazilian squad defeated rival Argentina, 2-0, in the final game of the five-team tournament played at Villa Maria del Triunfo Complex in Lima, Peru.

World No. 25 Brazil topped No. 27 Argentina, 2-0, in the final match of the South American Baseball Championship to clinch the regional title and the only available ticket for the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.

Five national teams participated in the regional tournament: Brazil, Argentina, No. 44 Peru, No. 76 Bolivia and Ecuador.

Former MLB pitcher Andre Rienzo tossed a complete game shutout for Brazil, giving up two hits and three walks, while striking out 12 against the Argentine lineup. Brazil scored the only two runs of the game in the top of the sixth inning, on a defensive error and a sacrifice fly by Marcio Issao.

In the bronze medal game, Ecuador topped host nation Peru, 7-5.

The championship was staged at Villa Maria del Triunfo Complex in Lima, Peru, a legacy of the Lima 2019 Pan Am Games. The complex also hosted the WBSC U-18 Women’s Softball World Chapionship 2021.
