Cuba tops host Mexico 4-2 to close U-15 Baseball World Cup opening day

Robier Hernandez, Daniel Reyes and Mailon Batista allowed only one hit combined to secure the win.

Cuba’s pitching staff shined today in their 4-2 win over host Mexico in the last game of the WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup opening day. Robier Hernandez, Daniel Reyes and Mailon Batista allowed combined on the one-hit victory.

Cuba led from start to finish, scoring three runs in the second inning, on an RBI double by Yaider Ruiz and a pair of sacrifice flies. 

In the bottom of the fourth, Mexico cut Cuba's lead to 3-2. They loaded the bases on two walks and a hit-by-pitch as Brayan Valenzuela scored on a passed ball and Yustin Canizales hit a two-out RBI single to center field, but the inning ended with Andres Cantu out at home trying to score the tying run from second. It was Mexico’s only hit of the game.

Cuba added a security run in the seventh when Pedro Danguillecourt scored on a wild pitch.

Reyes was the winner of the game, pitching 2.2 innings in relief, while Mailon Batista earned the save. Juan Diego Rivera was tagged with loss for Mexico.
