Defending champs Grises de Humacao open Puerto Rican Double-A League with win

The 83rd edition involves 43 teams and 1,200 players.

The defending champions Grises de Humacao defeated the Samaritanos, 7-3 on the opening day of the 83rd Puerto Rican Double-A League. The Grises outslugged the opponents with three home runs.

The rest of the teams will open their 2022 season on Friday, 4 March.

The Double-A League is the top baseball competition organized by the Baseball Federation of Puerto Rico, the second tier in the country after the Roberto Clemente Professional Winter League.

"After an extremely close 2021 tournament, with Humacao raising the trophy against all odds, we are ready to present another season of the best Puerto Rican baseball, with representation from most of the towns in the country," commented José Daniel Quiles Rosas, the Federation President.

The league involves 43 teams and about 1,200 players. The participants split into regional divisions: Sureste (South East), Este (East), Central, Norte (North), Sur (South), Suroeste (South West), Noroeste (Noth West) and Metro.

Each team will compete in a 16-game regular season. The top four finishers of each division will play best-of-five semifinals and a best-of-seven final. The division winners will compete in a round-robin, and the top four will advance to the best-of-seven National semifinals and final.

With the 2022 season, the Double-A League also launched its new website.
