Dominican Republic WBSC Premier12 manager Luis Rojas to coach third base for the Yankees

The son of Felipe Alou, Rojas became one of six Dominican-born managers in the history of Major League Baseball when the New York Mets promoted him to the skipper's role in 2020.

Luis Rojas, who managed the Dominican Republic National Team at the WBSC Premier12 2019, will be the new New York Yankees' third base coach.

Born in Santo Domingo in 1981, Rojas had a brief career as a minor league infielder for the Montreal Expos and the Baltimore Orioles. He started coaching in the Dominican Summer League for the Washington Nationals in 2006. He moved to the New York Mets in 2007.

After enjoying success at various levels as a minor league manager, Rojas led the Leones de Escogido to the 2015-2016 title of the Dominican Winter League.

The Mets created the quality control coach position to name Rojas to their MLB staff in 2019. He was promoted to the managerial job in 2020.

Rojas became the sixth Dominican-born manager in MLB history. His father, Felipe Alou, was the first (1992). Rojas and Alou were the sixth father-son duo to serve as MLB managers. The list includes Rojas' boss with the Yankees, Aaron Boone and his father, Bob.

After concluding the 2021 season with a 77-85 losing record, the Mets declined the 2021 option on Rojas.

Under Rojas, the Dominican Republic finished third in Group A of the WBSC Premier12 2019. They lost against the hosts Mexico, 6-1, and the US, 10-8, and defeated the Netherlands, 14-4.
