New university baseball league to be launched in Dominican Republic, FEDOBE officials announce

The Dominican Baseball Federation (FEDOBE, Federacion Dominicana de Beisbol) has announced the launch of a new University Baseball League (LBU, Liga Universitaria de Béisbol), in which 11 universities from across the country will compete. The announcement was made at the Dominican Olympic Committee.

“It’s a great project, aiming to solve a years-long situation that has seen our ballplayers leaving school and university in order to pursue their dream of becoming big leaguers,” said FEDOBE President Juan Nuñez. “Our league will serve as support for these young players who couldn’t yet reach the professional baseball leagues. Now they can retake and finish their university studies while playing the sport we all love.”

The three-month LBU season is set to begin on Friday, 13 August 2021, with all games scheduled on weekends. The only requirement to play in the LBU is being an active college student, with no age-limit in place.

The sports directors of different universities joined the presentation, including the Technological Institute of the Americas (ITLA), Apec University (UNAPEC), Technological Institute of Santo Domingo (INTEC), Technological University of Santiago (UTESA), Pedro Henríquez Ureña National University (UNPHU), Open University for Adults (UAPA), Organization and Method University (O&M), Technological University of Cibao Oriental (Uteco), Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) and the Higher Institute for Defense (Insude).

“This is a development/promotion plan. Sport must go to schools and universities. In the biggest countries, the best athletes comes from there. That’s why I want to congratulate FEDOBE and the universities sports directors for this huge step. This is the way, you can count with our support,” said Dominican Olympic Committee President Acosta Corletto.
