Venezuela claimed the win over Peru, 1-0, and advanced to the Super Round of the WBSC Softball Americas Qualifier. Mexico sealed Group B’s first place with a four-inning win over Brazil by a score of 10-0.

In a win-or-go-home game, Venezuela claimed the win over Peru, 1-0, and advanced to the Super Round of the WBSC Softball Americas Qualifier. Michelle Floyd pitched a complete-game shutout and drove in the only run of the game, a walkoff single in the bottom of the seventh to secure the third place in Group B.

Floyd made everything for Venezuela. From the circle, she was nearly untoachable, allowing only 2 hits and 1 walk in seven innings of work, with 9 strikeouts. And then in the bottom of the seventh delivered a clutch hit to drive in the only run of the game, with a hard-hit RBI single to left field to end the game.

Meiber Cabrera was also brilliant for Peru, but was charged with the loss. She pitched 6.2 episodes with 6 hits, 4 walks and 3 strikeouts.

The only run of the game was scored in the bottom of the seventh. Cabrera retired Eila Infante and Maria Soto for the first two outs of the inning, and faced Denisse Fuenmayor. The veteran shortstop hit a long fly ball to right field, easy to catch, but Giovannah Webb dropped the ball, allowing Fuenmayor reach second base, keeping the inning alive. Ana Coscorrosa was intentionally walked, and then Floyd hit a hard grounder to left field, driving in the game-winning run.

With this win Venezuela advances to the Super Round as the third team qualified in Group B. Peru finished fourth place and ended its participation in the tournament.

Mexico finishes perfect

In the last game of the day Mexico sealed Group B’s first place with a four-inning win over Brazil by a score of 10-0. A 3-run homer by Britanny Cervantes to left field in the first inning set the tone of the game, with Mexico scoring multiple runs in the first three episodes.

Both teams were already qualified to the Super Round, and played the last game of the Opening Round to decide the first place in Group B, and which team would advance with perfect record to the next phase.

And Mexico took a huge early with Cervantes’ blast in the first episode, and added four more in the second inning with an RBI-single by Nicole Mendes and a run-scoring double off the bat of Amanda Sanchez. Cervantes drove in one more with a sacrifice fly.

After today’s scores Mexico, Brazil and Venezuela advance to the Super Round as Group B first, second and third place respectively.
